Sell Your Scrap Copper in Kansas City for Top Dollar

Langley Recycling KC buys scrap copper from homeowners, contractors, and businesses across the Kansas City area. Bring in bare bright, #1 and #2 copper, tubing, pipe, and wire, and get paid a fair price based on current market rates.

Which copper grade do I have?

Answer these in order. The first one that fits is your grade.

  1. Does it still have plastic insulation on? That is insulated copper. We grade it by copper percentage at the scale.
  2. Is it thin, flat copper like roofing, sheet, or gutters? That is light copper.
  3. Is it clean, shiny stripped wire 16 gauge or thicker with no coating? That is bare bright. Testing at the scale makes it official.
  4. Is it tubing with no end pieces, hardeners, or dark or green oxidation? That is #1.
  5. Does the tubing have end pieces or threaded fittings, show oxidation, or is the wire thinner than 16 gauge? That is #2.

A quick tip on value

Bare, clean copper wire pays the most. Insulated wire and copper attached to other metals pay less because we have to separate it. Strip it before you bring it in if you can.

Copper grades and current prices

As of today, Langley pays $5.52/lb for bare bright copper under 100 lbs and $5.62/lb for 100 lbs or more.

Not all copper pays the same. The cleaner it is and the less non-copper material attached, the higher the grade.

How to tell it's copper

Color

Clean copper is reddish-orange, like a shiny penny. Old copper turns dull brown or green. That is tarnish, and it is still copper underneath.

Magnet test

A magnet will not stick to real copper. If it sticks, it is copper-coated steel.

Scratch test

Scratch a small spot. Bright salmon-orange underneath means copper. Silver or yellow means something else.

Weight

Copper feels heavy for its size, noticeably heavier than aluminum of the same shape.

What is copper?

Copper is a soft, reddish-orange metal that carries electricity and heat better than almost anything else, so it is inside nearly every wire, motor, and pipe. It never wears out and can be melted down and used again, which is why it is worth so much at a scrap yard. The cleaner and purer the copper, with no paint, insulation, or other metals attached, the more it is worth.
