Which iron & steel grade do I have?

Answer these in order. The first one that fits is your grade.

  1. Is it large or awkward, needing a torch to cut down (forklifts, heavy equipment, balled or tangled rebar)? That is torch iron.
  2. Is it straight rebar 2 ft or shorter? That is rebar.
  3. Is it an I-beam, H-beam, or plate no larger than 3 ft by 18 in? That is prepared structural steel.
  4. Is it a brake rotor or drum? That is #1 cast. Cast-iron tubs and radiators are #2 cast.
  5. Is it stamped DI or does it dent under a hammer instead of cracking? That is ductile iron.
  6. Is it everyday household steel and iron, like appliances? That is mixed scrap.

Two size rules to remember

Structural steel: prepared means no larger than 3 ft by 18 in. Bigger is unprepared plate. Rebar: prepared means 2 ft or shorter, and balled or tangled rebar is torch iron.

How to tell it's iron & steel

Magnet test

Iron and steel stick to a magnet.

Rust

Iron rusts orange over time. Aluminum and copper do not.

Ductile or cast?

Look for DI or D.I. stamped in the metal. Cast iron chips or cracks under a hammer. Ductile iron dents.

What is iron & steel?

Iron and steel are the most common metals we buy and the ones with the most categories. They run from everyday household scrap and cast parts to structural beams. Grade depends on what the piece is, how big it is, and whether it is ready to go straight to the shredder or furnace.
