Jacob L. Loose Park or more commonly referred to as Loose Park is the third largest park in KC, Missouri. Loose Park is named after Jacob Loose, a local biscuit mogul who died in 1923. His wife Ella Loose, who acquired the land, dedicated it to his memory. The park is 75-acres and is one of KC, Missouri’s most popular and historical natural areas. It is located at 51st and Wornall Road and has a lake, shelter house, Civil War markers, tennis courts, a water park, picnic areas, a Rose Garden and a Japanese Tea Room and Garden. The park is known as being a major site for the Battle of Westport, during the American Civil War, where Confederate forces were routed by Union forces in the park boundaries. It is estimated that 29,000 people were involved in that battle. The property at that time was owned by William Bent, a man who led wagon trains and traded with the Native Americans.
The Rose Garden hosts a number of outdoor events, including theatrical performances and wedding ceremonies. The first garden contained 120 rose plants. Today there are estimated to be about 3,000 roses of nearly 130 varieties in the 1.5-acre garden. The Loose Park Garden Center was built in 1957 for meetings and horticultural exhibitions of various kinds. It has a horticultural library that is open Monday through Friday and a Japanese Tea Room. The Japanese Tea Room and Garden is a small traditional Japanese garden conceived as a cultural exchange between the sister cities of Kurashiki, Japan and Kansas City, Missouri.
Loose Park has a picnic shelter that can be reserved from May 1 to October 31. The shelter has 16 tables with a seating capacity of 128 people. It also has electricity, a playground nearby, restrooms, lights and a grill.
Loose park is frequented by locals who head there to enjoy nature and the beautiful surroundings. The spacious park is one of the most popular natural areas in the city. The well-maintained landscaping, facilities and array of features make it the perfect place to relax, have a picnic or kick a soccer ball around.
