The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City is known for its collection of art from nearly every continent and culture. Visitors can enjoy some of the 34,500 pieces in the collection at the museum that span over 5,000 years of humanity. The museum arose from the aspirations of two individuals who each envisioned a public art museum for Kansa City and the region. However, both individuals died before this vision came to reality. When William Rockhill Nelson died in 1915, the bulk of his estate was used to establish the William Rockhill Nelson Trust for the purchase of the works of art. When Mary McAfee Atkins died in 1911, she provided the city with approximately one-third of her estate to purchase land for a public art museum. The two estates were combined to build an art museum for the people of Kansas City. The museum officially opened to the public on December 11, 1933, and has since welcomed all people. The museum has offered free admission to all people for nearly 25 years.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art features an array of different temporary exhibits. The collections include European painting, Asia, American painting, photography, Native American, Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park and many others. The sculpture park was designed by Dan Kiley and contains the largest collection of monumental bronzes by Henry Moore in the United States.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum has two restaurants and a gift shop. The Rozzelle Court Restaurant is an open-air Italian courtyard offering buffet-style service of main dishes, salads, soups, bread and desserts. The Cafe is another restaurant that is glass-enclosed featuring savoury bites and desserts. The Museum Store has a wide selection of art and design books, home decor, cards, exhibition catalogs, CDs, and many more gift items.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum is a great place to relax, get inspired or spend your evening or weekend. It is a must-see cultural destination.
