Kauffman Stadium, often called “The K” is located in Kansas City, Missouri. It is a baseball park home to the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). It is part of the Harry S. Truman Sports Complex, alongside the adjacent Arrowhead Stadium, which is home to the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). The Harry S. Truman Sports Complex is a sports and entertainment facility that was considered revolutionary at the time of construction.
Kauffman Stadium opened in the spring of 1973 as Royals Stadium. The stadium’s name was changed in 1993 to honor Royals founder Ewing Kauffman just months before his death. It is the sixth-oldest stadium in the MLB and is one of eight stadiums in Major League Baseball that does not have a corporate-sponsored name (others are Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and National Parks). The stadium was the last baseball-only park that was built in the Major Leagues from 1966 to 1991 and one of the few baseball-only facilities built during the heyday of what is often called cookie-cutter stadiums. Kauffman stadium is one of two facilities, alongside Dodger Stadium, that are still active and were never converted into multi-purpose stadiums.
The park’s best-known feature is the fountain and waterfall display, known as the Water Spectacular, behind the right-field fence. The fountain stands 322 feet (98 m) and is the largest privately-funded fountain in the world. Behind the fountain, there are four statues of George Brett, Dick Howser, Frank White and Ewing Kauffman and his wife Muriel.
Kauffman Stadium has an array of food and drink options. The stadium has a pair of smokers that continuously slow-cook meat for all the vendors so that fans can enjoy KC’s barbecue tradition. Don’t forget to indulge in baseball’s classic snacks, such as popcorn and ice cream.
The stadium offers entertainment for the entire family. The Outfield Experience was designed for families with mini-golf, a Royals-themed carousel, playground and batting cages and much more. Fans can also walk through the Hall of Fame Museum to learn more about the Kansas City Royals’ history and players over the decades.
